With two decades of experience as a newspaper columnist and journalism professor, I'm well-versed in writing effective copy for marketing or news, talking points, AP-style press releases for print, radio, television and all manner of social media content. I am also a gifted storyteller, and my data visualization skills have revolutionized public information efforts for the Federal Highway Administration.

Education

Experience

I believe in the power of the written word. I've seen it transform lives firsthand. Since my days as a journalism student at the University of Wyoming, my writing skills have taken me far -- from the office of Wyoming's governor, to the halls of Congress and the White House. I've written two books, jokes for Jay Leno, met Neil Armstrong and had innumerable adventures along the way helping to communicate the successes and achievements of others.

Without question, writing is the foundation of my career. Now I have the privilege of using words to help bring new worlds into focus, important issues to the forefront, and positive change to people and their communities. As a college professor, I get to share my gifts and help students build a strong foundation in writing from which to launch their own careers.

Director, Office of Media Relations
Federal Highway Administration
  • Direct national media relations for a $44 billion agency critical to the national economy.
  • Advise senior leadership, including the U.S. Transportation Secretary, on public affairs programs, communications strategies, key media issues and other opportunities.
  • Develop, execute and evaluate national communications programs to enhance public interest and engagement in transportation issues.
  • Lead development and implementation of wide-ranging communications strategies for agency’s internal and external stakeholders.
  • Write and edit news releases, media advisories, talking points, speeches, policy statements, fact sheets  and provide on-the-record answers for reporters nationwide.

Masters, Public Administration

University of Southern California
My time at USC opened many wonderful doors and brought me in touch with amazing people -- Fight On!

Speeches/Talking Points

Bachelor of Arts, Journalism

University of Wyoming

My writing skills first emerged in Wyoming, and the lessons learned there remain a continuing source of strength -- Go Pokes!

I excel at crafting memorable and funny speeches. Working as a professional comedian for nearly 30 years in nearly every state and internationally, I know how to write effective material that holds an audience's attention and funny lines for a wide range of speakers. I've written jokes for other comedians (including Jay Leno, Stephen Colbert and a cast member of "Seinfeld"), as well as for politicians and government executives.
